Description
**The Opportunity:**
A great opportunity has opened up for an experienced mechanic who wants to fully utilize their skills to work on an incredible variety of motor vehicles and highway maintenance equipment in our Mt. Vernon shop.
We are looking for a truck and heavy equipment mechanic to inspect, diagnose, repair, design components for, and perform preventative maintenance on a variety of light and heavy trucks and highway maintenance equipment. These positions work to overhaul and repair all types of diesel and gasoline engines and vehicle components and also concentrate on troubleshooting and repairing electrical, hydraulic, and electronic control systems used in automotive, heavy, marine, and specialized equipment.
*This position is scheduled to work 4 ten hour days and the schedule is 6:30am to 5:00pm Tuesday through Friday. Candidates must be available to work this schedule.*

**This position will perform the following work:**
* Troubleshoot, repair, or replace components related to hydraulic systems, electronic engine controls, anti-lock brakes, and various other electronic systems
* Repair, overhaul, and maintain steering and suspension systems
* Troubleshoot, overhaul, or rebuild all types of gear boxes such as manual and automatic transmissions, differentials, angle boxes, reduction boxes, and transfer cases
* Repair, design, and troubleshoot hydraulic systems
* Troubleshoot and repair brake systems of all types, including air and hydraulic
* Fabricate, weld and install additional equipment to vehicles such as arrow board mounts, emergency light mount brackets, and tool box mount brackets
* Assess damage and prepare repair estimates
* Complete reports on repairs, accidents, and inventory
* Operate equipment for snow and ice removal as needed
* Other duties as assigned
**An ideal candidate for this position shall have:**
* Two years of experience with preventative maintenance or repairs OR one year of experience as a journey level mechanic maintaining and repairing heavy duty equipment **required;**three years of heavy equipment mechanic experience preferred
* Experience using computerized diagnostic equipment and emission testing equipment
* Working knowledge of hydraulic pumps, motor, valves, and hydrostatic drives
* Ability to furnish and maintain a basic set of hand tools
* CDL, class 'A' with endorsement 'N' and without airbrake restrictions **OR** the ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment.
* Ability to lift and move items weighing over 50lbs
* Self-motivated, organized, and familiar with computers
* Team-focused and able to work well within a team
* Valid Driver's license
* Vocational/technical training in heavy equipment maintenance and repair including welding/fabricating a plus
**Note: **
This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, candidates who are appointed are required to become members of the WFSE, or arrange to pay to that union a fee equivalent to its regular monthly dues. The union shop provision shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee's initial 30 days in this classification.
